[V2] Membership option types
Every pricing option you add to a membership uses one of four billing structures — Open enrollment, Custom, Start and end date, or Class package. This guide covers what each one does, when to use it, and exactly what it asks for, so you can pick the right structure the first time.

Where option types live
Option types are set on a per-pricing-option basis, inside a membership — not on the membership itself. If you haven't created a membership yet, start with Setting up memberships, then come back here once you're ready to configure a pricing option's billing.

The Membership options tab, under Edit membership.
-
Go to Services & Products > Memberships.
-
Open the membership you want to price.
-
Click the Membership options tab.
-
Click + Add new, or open an existing option to change its structure.
-
Open the Payment tab — this is where you choose the option type.
The four option types at a glance
|
Type |
Best for |
|---|---|
|
Open enrollment |
Auto-renewing memberships that bill on a start date and continue until you cancel them |
|
Custom |
Custom-length structures, like a 12-month or 12-week membership |
|
Start and end date |
Programs with a fixed start and end date, like an after-school program or a 10-week fitness bootcamp |
|
Class package |
Selling classes by the number, like a 10-class or 25-class package |
Open enrollment
This is the ongoing, auto-renewing structure — it bills on a recurring schedule starting from the participant's start date, and keeps billing until someone cancels it.

The Payment tab with Open enrollment selected.
-
Select the Open enrollment tile.
-
Turn on Sign up fee if you want to charge an upfront fee at registration, and enter the amount.
-
Enter the Membership fee and choose how often it recurs under Recurring payment frequency (for example, Monthly).
-
Under Charge first payment, choose At registration or At start date.
-
Turn on Pro-rate first payment period if you want the first charge adjusted so future billing aligns to a set date, like the 1st of the month.
|
NOTE Changes to membership pricing only apply to future registrations — they never affect participants who already signed up. |
Custom
Use Custom for a fixed number of payments over a set length, like a 12-month or 12-week program — it bills a set number of times, then stops, rather than continuing indefinitely.

The Payment tab with Custom selected.
-
Select the Custom tile.
-
Under Billing option, choose Payment plan (spread across payments) or Pay in full (one charge).
-
Turn on Sign up fee if you're charging an upfront fee, and enter the amount.
-
Enter the Membership fee.
-
If you chose Payment plan, enter the Number of payments and choose the Frequency.
-
Under Charge first payment, choose At registration, At start date, or Select payment start date.
-
Turn on Allow a future start date if participants should be able to pick their own start date, instead of always starting on the day they register.
-
Turn on Delay payment schedule if you need to delay the first recurring charge — useful for pre-payments or a future billing start.
-
Enter an Expiration date after start date (a number of weeks or months) if the membership should automatically end.
-
Turn on Use attendance limits if you want to cap how many classes a participant can attend.
Start and end date
Use this structure for programs tied to specific calendar dates — like an after-school session or a fitness bootcamp — rather than a rolling number of payments.

The Payment tab with Start and end date selected.
-
Select the Start and end date tile.
-
Set the Start date and End date.
-
Select the Days of the week program/class is offered.
-
Turn on Sign up fee if you're charging an upfront fee, and enter the amount.
-
Enter the Membership fee and choose the Frequency (for example, per week).
-
Under Billing option, choose a recurring payment plan (for example, weekly) or Pay in full.
-
Under Charge first payment, choose At registration or At start date.
Class package
Use this for selling classes by the number — a punch pass or class pack — where the membership runs out once the classes are used, not on a calendar date.

The Payment tab with Class package selected.
-
Select the Class package tile.
-
Enter the Number of classes included.
-
Under Billing option, choose Payment plan (spread across payments) or Pay in full (one charge).
-
Turn on Sign up fee if you're charging an upfront fee, and enter the amount.
-
Enter the Membership fee.
-
If you chose Payment plan, enter the Number of payments and choose the Frequency, then set Charge first payment and, if needed, turn on Allow a future start date.
Example: Converting a punch pass to a class package
A studio has been tracking a 10-visit punch pass on paper and wants to sell and track it directly in MyStudio, with the membership automatically ending once a participant uses all their classes.
-
Create a new membership option and select the Class package tile on its Payment tab.
-
Enter 10 for Number of classes.
-
Under Billing option, choose Pay in full since punch passes are typically paid upfront.
-
Enter the Membership fee for the full pack.
-
Leave Sign up fee off, since the class package price already covers the full cost.
-
Save the option, then check a participant's remaining class count from their participant record as they attend.
Example: Running a 10-week after-school program
A studio runs an after-school martial arts program that meets twice a week for exactly 10 weeks each fall, and wants billing to stop automatically when the session ends.
- Create a new membership option and select the Start and end date tile.
- Set the Start date and End date to match the 10-week session.
- Select Tue and Thu under Days of the week program/class is offered.
- Enter the Membership fee and set Frequency to per week.
- Under Billing option, choose the weekly payment plan so families are billed across the session instead of all at once.
- Set Charge first payment to At registration so the first week is charged as soon as a family signs up.
Common questions
Can members pay in installments instead of all at once?
Yes — on Custom and Class package options, choose Payment plan under Billing option and set the Number of payments and Frequency. Choose Pay in full for a single charge instead.
Will changing a membership fee affect people who already joined?
No. Pricing changes only apply to future registrations — current participants keep the price they signed up at.
Which option type should I use for a punch pass or class pack?
Class package — it bills for a set number of classes rather than a calendar period, and the option runs out once those classes are used.
What's the difference between Custom and Start and end date?
Custom bills a fixed number of payments regardless of calendar dates — good for a "12-month membership" that can start any time. Start and end date is tied to specific calendar dates and days of the week, like a session that always runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from September to November.
